How to write the perfect Enterprise Product Design Brief👌 - Part Three

Create the perfect design brief in 3 easy steps!

Use it or lose it.

Now that you’ve learned how to craft the perfect enterprise design brief, it’s time to put your brain into overdrive and use those new skills! Let’s get to it.

Start with getting feedback from people familiar with the problem you’re solving.

Once you’ve refined the brief, send it to designers. How do they respond to the brief? What questions do they ask you?

Next, refine your brief: Fill in those missing details. You’re aiming for full clarity here to get you a great design as fast as possible.

Invite your team

Show your people and get that feedback!

You want to identify any specific issues that your folks find with what you’ve written. Did you capture the situation with great accuracy? What details are missing that could tip the scales for the decision-makers? Speaking of tip:

Tip: Line-by-line

Amazon has a neat little trick for this one. When trying to align a group of people around a document, start with a silent read-through with everyone in the room. Give your people a chance to digest the content of your design brief at their own pace. Once everyone has done that, go through the document sentence-by-sentence. After every full-stop, give the group a chance to comment on or question the brief.

Send out the brief

Send out your brief and invite designers to take a look. But make sure to ask different individuals with varying styles and opinions to get access to a broad array of perspectives.

Refine

Take note of all the questions designers ask. (Write them down if you can’t remember!)  This is a great opportunity to gather feedback on what you’ve written. Then, clarify and rewrite the bits and pieces that weren’t clear.

As a document that lives alongside the project, this brief is going to help new starters get up to speed quickly.
